What has the Kraftsman been doing lately ?
Here's where I'll keep you up to date on what's new in the workshop and on the website. Enjoy!

March 01, 2009 - More web site cleanup

A few changes to the website this week but not much activity going on in the workshop. I'm still working on the cabinets to add in the workshop. I've completed two of them and have one more to go. Hopefully I'll have them completed this week.

I will start ramping up with the tack trunk project this week as I'd like to get it completed for Chelsea's birthday. I've created a page exclusively for the tack trunk project. If you are interested in watching my progress keep your eye on that page.

On the website I've reworked the menu to make navigation a little easier and also made it easier on myself to maintain. I've also cleaned up the Lingerie and Jewelry Box page.

It's not as quiet as it looks!

I haven't made an update in some time, but that doesn't mean that it's all quiet and dark in the workshop :-).

I'm still working on designing my daughter's tack trunk, hopefully within the next few weeks I'll complete the design and start building. I'll keep you updated on the progress on the Projects under Construction page.

I needed some cabinets in the workshop to store some of the finishing supplies and to also make some use of that French Cleat that I put up. I didn't want to spend a lot of time making some beautiful kitchen grade cabinets and I also wanted to use up some of the wood I had lying around the workshop so I used the particle board from my old entertainment system to create the cabinets quickly. I've got one completed and hanging on the cleat. I'll add some pictures to the web site after I complete the other two cabinets.

I've made quite a few updates recently to the web site and there are many more in the works. There is an updated links page with the addition of a new Sketchup link category. Some great articles on how to use Sketchup for woodworking. I've added the Lingerie and Jewelry Chest to the completed projects page along with a slideshow of shots of the completed chest and a slideshow of some of the shots of the project during the build. I've also spent a considerable amount of time just cleaning up the HTML for the site, but I still have much more to do.

Things to look for in the future ....

  • An update to the Completed Projects page to make navigation of the projects easier
  • An image map for the workshop to highlight the machines and major tools that I use.
  • Hopefully a webcam added to the Workshop page so you can see what I'm up to at that moment.

Sketchup, Outdoor Projects, and Workshop Additions !

Since finishing the jewelry chest I've been working on learning how to use Sketchup to build 3D models of my designs. This is a great tool and it helped to make the building of the solar heater platform for the pool a snap. I've also used it to design the decking for our pool, and a flip top cabinet for my new planer. I've updated the site with some of the new projects and some of the new tools in the workshop. Enjoy !

The Lingerie and Jewelry Chest is Done !

It's been quiet here on the web page, but not in the workshop! Since the beginning of February I've been working on this jewelry chest to give to my mom for her 70th birthday. It's made from some black walnut that my Dad had rough cut over 25 years ago. The web page for this project has all the details and a few shots of the finished gift.

DVD Player Cabinet is ready for finishing!

I finished sanding the cabinet tonight and the Transtint dye stain is due to be delivered tomorrow so maybe I'll start the finishing work on the cabinet this weekend. I added the little chat window to the home page since my daughter wanted me to add some kind of blog page so she could leave me messages. Feel free to add some comments! I've started another project, but it's a surprise so I wont be posting any info on this until it's done ... sorry :-(

More Room in the Workshop!

With Nancy's help we cleaned out and made more space in the garage so I'm not tripping over everything. I added some pictures to the The Workshop page. The picture frame is done and mounted on the office wall ! I started Project #3, the DVD Player cabinet.

The picture frame is drying after using the new picture frame jig to help clamp it tight. Cross your fingers. :-)

Project #1 - Picture Frame Jig added.

The picture frame jig link at the left will take you to this project page. I learned quite a lot from this simple project (like how important it is clamp your material when assembling and making perfectly square cuts). I also got some good experience on the new table saw.

Web site started.

After finishing up on the picture frame jig I thought it would be good to start documenting some of my woodworking experiences. (if for nothing else so that I could have a good laugh a couple of years from now).
